2) Life Drawing

These studies really helped me understand the shapes and the structure of the human form as a whole.

These studies are me trying to draw the model without drawing the outlines of the body.

Negative space drawing

These studies are me drawing the negative space of the model. I often find myself using this technique if there's a part of a drawing I'm struggling with, using this technique often solves the problem.

30 minute measured drawing

For this study we had to draw the model using 'beautiful lines'. I wanted to keep my lines long, curvy and simple.

These were 5 minute drawings of the model without me looking at the paper. I didn't find this technique enjoyable or effective.

1 hour measured drawing

I felt the positioning of the legs and the slouch of the back were key areas to focus on and described the emotion of the models pose the best.

For this piece I used charcoal and attempted to smudge areas with my finger to create tone. I'm not a big fan of this technique but I want to look at it again with a subject with more tonal contrast.

For this piece I used compressed charcoal. I wanted to use quick mark making to make the piece have more movement and to add subtle details. To improve on this technique I try and use bigger harder lines for areas the were dark or lines that need to be at the forefront.

30 minute measured drawing.

I usually like to start my drawings with an an area that I find particularly interesting. This is often areas where the model places a lot of there weight or areas that reflect the emotion of the pose. For example this drawing shows the relaxed posture of the model sitting down on the chair.

I was really happy with the area that I'd done with the small amount of time I had left and felt it was a nice drawing by itself so I cropped it by drawing a border around it.
